A Love Song to Low Hanging Fruit

Afternoon folks.

Coming up for some air after another epic canning session. Today (so far!) saw 22 jars of antipasto, 8 jars of pickled jalapenos and 10 jars of spaghetti sauce added to the cupboard. Whewph!

So I had this beautiful moment of juxtaposition yesterday while out running errands. As I drove down a country road, I looked to my left to see a massive commercial berry farm, the parking lot jammed to the gills with folks out fighting the crowds and the late afternoon sun to spend good money on berries.

And then, immediately across the street, in the cool shade of the boulevarde was an elderly man, with a repurposed basket in hand, quietly foraging the abundant wild blackberries, fo' free.

No crowds. No parking lot wars. No big bill.

Just sweet, juicy berries and solitude.

Now don't get me wrong. Those other berries are beautiful too and have their place. But it struck me how many more folks were willing to shell out good cash and brave the crowds, when literally right across the street an abundant harvest was ripe for the taking.

In our culture, we tend to value things that are difficult to come by, that cost the earth, our sanity and our precious time. In doing so, we often overlook the things that come easy, the abundance at our feet.

We forget that the things that come easy, the sweet, nourishing moments of dumb luck or serendipity - these things will fill us up just as surely as the those that come with difficulty, a hard climb, a hefty price tag.

Don't begrudge the low hanging fruit. Let it stain your face and your fingers and fill your basket up with joy.

As always.

Best,
S
